Week 3 Posting -DDR4 and DDR5 RAM

DDR4 and DDR5 RAM

DDR4 and DDR5 memory sticks are the most popular solutions for desktop computers currently. DDR3 exists still, but like all technology, time has surpassed its performance. That same statement can be applied when assessing the longevity of DDR4 in the future market. This is simply due to newer products offering a significant performance increase, and motherboards being built around that design. This does not mean DDR4 is weak or incapable, in most cases, it still outperforms a user's needs.

Another crucial factor to consider is the compatibility of the memory with the rest of the system. You will need to upgrade to Intel's 12th Generation or AMD’s 6000 series CPU’s and purchase a motherboard with these sockets and DDR5 compatibility. This constitutes a significant change one must plan for when designing a system.

The most important factor in the end is your budget. As shown in the image above, DDR5 offers a slight bump in performance. If the end goal is to future-proof a computer, and the cost difference is worth it, this may be the solution to choose.
